  • Using Phpmyadmin (or another MySQL management tool), first backup your database. Then navigate to your wp_usermeta table and locate the meta_key called “wp_capabilities” for your user_id. Change the meta-value for this record to:

    a:1:{s:13:"administrator";s:1:"1";}

    Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

    I tried updating to the latest version and everything got messed up so I rolled back to an older version. I’m not very technical (I have no idea how to change meta-values) so this looks like it’s going to be a big challenge. I also tried to deactivate all of my plugins at once, but nothing actually deactivated. Would you suggest simply upgrading to the latest version of wordpress and then working out the issues one by one? Must I upgrade the plugins first? (This is what I did before but the site got messed up).

    Absolutely – yes!

    Must I upgrade the plugins first?

    No. Deactivate the plugins, upgrade the site, then update the plugins and reactivate them.

    I selected all the plugins, clicked on deactivate, but it doesn’t say that the plugins are deactivated. The “deactivate” option is still available by each plugin. Can I go ahead and upgrade anyways?

    Is it strange that I cannot deactivate the plugins?

    Is it strange that I cannot deactivate the plugins?

    Yes. It suggests that something is very wrong with your site. Try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin.

    site is hosted by network solutions and I found the folder but I have no idea how to rename. On hold with blasted music at network solutions support for 30 minutes already! Any idea how to rename folders in their ftp system?

    Sorry – I haver never used their file manager. I always use an FTP client.

    when deactivating the plugins,do I rename the directory plugins.hold and then upgrade to the latest version of wp and only then rename the plugins.hold folder back to plugins?

    plugins deactivated. upgraded to latest version. before changing folder back to plugins, checked to see if I could add new post and it still doesn’t work. And this is without any active plugins.

    Where did you install WordPress on this domain? I cannot find any sign of it at https://wwww.americanbiotechnologist.com/

    sorry for being so amateur but where do I find the “wp_usermeta table”?

    It is in your WordPress database.

    I installed WP using networksolutions tool over 4 years ago. Can I find the database in my dashboard or do I have to go through my networksolutions tool?
