Can't show abreviated posts and limit post number in Twenty Fourteen

I’m trying to have a limited amount of posts set on the main template page and it’s not working via the Dashboard at all..

Furthermore I was wondering if there was a way to possibly show an abbreviated form, or snippet if you will, of the content of each post on the main page instead of the whole body of text.
