Unzipping wordpress

  • I downloaded the WordPress and when I try to unzip I get the message
    “unable to process WordPress”
    WinZip was able to extract only part of the file because it contains invalid or missing data. Partial file will be named CORRUPT

    I have tried to do three times.. no luck

    I want to learn how to use WordPress to design and create website.. I maintain my son’s website and use a program that is wysiwyg type web design program… my web host would like me to try using WordPress, but I have no idea how to use.. I would like to learn how and thought by downloading WordPress on my computer I could work with it and learn how to use before I tackle it on my webhost site. I’m new to this web designing… in about a month or so, want to update his website with new design…
    If downloading and installing on my computer wont help me learn it I’ll skip it and learn another way…

  • Installing on your computer using xampp will make things much quicker certainly so it’s worth doing.

    I just downloaded a new copy and it unzips fine on a Mac, jzip on Windows and also Windows Explorer extracts it correctly.

    How large is the file before you unzip it?
    I see it as 6.04mb

    I see the same 6.04mb Yes
    if I can get it installed, I can use it to learn wordpress?
    I have been creating some design ideas in Photoshop but would be nice to be able to learn wordpress and learn my designing in it.
    this web creating is all new to me and I’m trying to learn more…

    Okay.. I’ve installed XAMPP and then installed WordPress into the correct folder.. but am now lost as to how to set it up so can use it to try and create a web design… I want to be able to learn how to use wordpress and create my website design offline … I have a website that I maintain for my son..which was created in a wysiwyg web designer… I want my own design theme.. not what wordpress themes are out there so I want to play with this wordpress to try and design a new website.. but don’t want it online at all until I have it ready to go… How do I do this …

    I assume you used xampp’s control panel to start the apache and MySQL services.

    In your brower’s address bar enter localhost/<your wordpress folder>. I assume you extracted WordPress into the htdocs subfolder of xampp? If you do not get an installation screen it means that you need to set up the wp-config.php contents. There is a file in your main WordPress folder called wp-config-sample.php. Make a copy of it and rename it to wp-config.php

    The link provided above will give the details on how to set up the config file. You also need to create a database using phpMyAdmin which you can execute by typing localhost/phpMyAdmin in your browser’s address bar.

    I followed the instructions on the link.. got the XAMPP installed, created the folder in htdocs for WordPress and extracted the files into the folder… I did copy of wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php
    I saw this one

    13. The connection details you need are as follows:

    14.Save as wp-config.php.

    I also saw this way

    I didn’t know what MySQL username and Password was.. it never asked me to set one up.. so left them as this 2nd instructions…
    I put localhost/phpmyadmin in a browser and get Page not found…

    I probably did something wrong I’m sure but not sure where I went wrong… and not sure where to go to fix and continue.. I don’t want it to put anything online..I only want to be able to bring up WordPress and play with it to try and design a website using it because I have no clue how to use.. am only using a wysiwyg type web designer and my host would like me to use WordPress, but until I can figure out how to use it and design a website that looks good, I don’t want it online and messing up my website that is online.. so I saw that this could be loaded and used and not post anything online… If there is another way to learn this WordPress and work with it, I can do that… If this will allow me to create a web design, preview it and all without it going online, I need to figure it out somehow…
