You can put the gallery wherever you like by either using the shortcode or template tag. Try using the shortcode to place the gallery above your content in the WP editor.

Can you expand on this? Where do we edit the shortcode? I’d like the gallery to be in the middle of the page, with content above and below it.

You simply place the shortcode wherever you like within the WordPress editor.
