    Hello
    – I guess my WordPress version is 3.9.1, checking updates gives: “You have the latest version of WordPress. You do not need to update.”
    – ExpressCurate version is 1.2.3.

    I installed ExpressCurate, activated the plugin.
    Then in the plugin settings I chose to curate a “work”, not a post.
    On a new “work” page, when I click the button nothing happens (I tried with Safari and Chrome under Mac Osx).

    What should I check to make it work?

    To better understand the specifics of your environment, we will need to clarify what plugin or theme did enable that custom ‘work’ post type and the page you mentioned.
    Some plugins/themes do provide quite specific structure/environment and for them we will need to adjust/customize our plugin as well.

    It was found out the website was hosted with quite old versions of PHP and WordPress. In the end it was decided to migrate to a better hosting service.

    We RECOMMEND to run sites on the latest PHP 5.3.x and WordPress 3.9.x for the best performance, appearance, functionality and security.
