• Hi everyone,
I may have the strangest problem yet! For reasons too complicated to go into, I changed my category from simply xxx to: xxx
When I went to view site, I found to my horror that the entire category had disappeared, and the posts that were assigned to XXX as a category – I accessed them through the month category, since their topic category had disappeared – were now ineditable. There I found that the “Edit this” option next to the bylines of these entries had disappeared. I have a problem with this as I’ve decided to remove some of the posts, and now I can’t do that!
When I clicked on the text of one such entry, the following message comes up:

    Not Found
    The requested URL /blog/index.ph

    – my name @ 11:59 pm
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Help!!

The problem is unfortunately bigger than that. The category doesn’t exist anymore, so I can’t change it. And when i try to input the same link using ahref etc, it tells me that it can’t accept the duplicate category. meanwhile, i see that on my categories page, there is an invisible first entry(invisible because it’s a link?) corresponding to this inaccessible categoryy which has a delete option next to it – but no edit option, and when i attempt to click on this delete option, nothing happens. I fear this might be a problem for wordpress admin people. Any help would be much much appreciated! Thanks much in advance.

I would suggest the first thing you should do is back-up your database.

The category (If you mean “Art”) does still exist. If you mean you cannot access it from the admin area that is understandable considering the potential for parsing errors naming a category as a link (that looks like what has been done). I would suggest going into the database and renaming the category there.

how do you mean by going into the database? (Pardon my ignorance)
Also, Andrew- how does one back-up the database? (I’m really new to all this)
    Thanks much much!

What kind of a backend do you have? I may be able to help if it’s cpanel or phpMyAdmin, others may be able to help if they know what you’re runnning…
