• Hi all,

Host Ubuntu 12.04 desktop (static internal IP assigned by router)
VM (guest) 12.04 desktop/LAMP (static internal IP assigned by router)
    Virtualizer Oracle VirtualBox
    One static IP
    (Fibre Broadband connected to router)

I have 4 websites (name-based) created running on VM. They can be browsed locally running /localhost/site-name

All domains/sub-domains are now pointing to the same static IP.

Please advise how can I make them browsed on Internet? How to configure wp-config.php enabling them to be browsed on Internet?

    Thanks

    Regards

  • Have you registered a domain? Have you clarified with your broadband internet provider that they allow you to host a public web site through their network?

Most home broadband ISP’s terms of service disallow hosting a public web site from computers on their network (which sounds like you are trying to do based on your description of a static IP). Secondly, on most typical home broadband connections, the upload speed is significantly slower than the download speeds that you experience when using your connection. This means that with any kind of significant traffic, your web site hosted at home will be VERY slow.

For the $5 or so a month that a shared hosting plan will cost you, save yourself the headache and consider using a internet hosting provider. If you are not sure where to start with hosting options, please review the following: https://www.ads-software.com/hosting/

There are several public host where you can host easily at quite a low price. If you host of your home, then bill for your home broadband will be higher and higher.I will suggest to host outside.
But as a technical solution, you can host website from home.Get a static IP address, install a web server in your computer , purchase a domain name and redirect it to your IP.

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for your advice.

Yes, I have domains registered with Godaddy.

There is no restriction on my subscribing plan, 100Mb/100MB up/down with static IP, that I can’t host websites on my computer nor through ISP’s network. My plan is quite expensive.

My websites are now hosted on Godaddy, Ultimate hosting plan, which provides with following feature.
    1) When my computer is up (I’m not running it 24/7) visitors will browse the websites on my computer.

    2) When my computer is down visitors will browse the websites on Godaddy’s server.

Now I have 4 websites running on a VM which can be browsed locally without problem, by running /localhost/site-name

The VM is assigned with an internal static IP, 192.168.0.201. I’m prepared to make the DNS of those 4 websites on Godaddy server pointing to the same external static IP to see whether it works. But I wonder which items on wp-config.php needed to change? And how?

Years ago I succeeded making use of Perdition and MySQL running on a VM routing the emails to their email servers on ONE static IP. The email servers are running on VMs
