themes are unzipped

I am new to customizing wordpress themes, and would like to customize a responsive started theme. When I download the themes they are already unzipped so I cannot upload them to my themes in wordpress. I tried bones, roots and quark so far but they are all doing the same thing. Do these download differently because they are started themes?
