I have this problem that’s driving me crazy. I am using the “eshop_list_aplha” shortcode on my front page (Home page) set in the wordpress settings/reading/ “front page displays” section. However if I set the page that has the “eshop_list_aplha” shortcode on it to be the front page whenever one of the alphabetical letters is clicked on rather than opening all the products beggining with that letter i.e letter “a” it opens a page displaying all the posts? in this case the default wordpress post “hello world”. I’ve been going around in cirlces with this issue for months now, I’ve tried various experiments and combinations of settings, changing themes, turning off all plugins etc,etc but all to no avail.

If I set the front page to another page everyting works fine but this defeates the whole point of having the home page as the main shop page which is what we want to do.

Does anyone know what might be casuing this issue, I would be deeply appreciative if anyone could help me out. Yourts Andy, Malvern the UK

  • Is your front page static or your main posts page?.

Hello Esmi, many thanks for responding, OK the front page is a static page, and the posts page is left unselected as this website doesnt have a blog.

Start by setting up a main posts page – whether you intend to have a blog or not.

OK, set up a new page (called it news) published it but haven’t added it to the menu. Set it to be the main post page. Tried out the eshop list alpha on the front page but problem at this point still exists. Your advice is very much appreciated Esmi, I look forward to seeign if the issue can be resolved. Let me know what to do/try next.

Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all other plugins deactivated?

Hi Esmi, sorry about delay in getting back to you, OK so have changed to default theme twenty fourteen and deactivated all plugins (except eshop) and unfortunalty the problem still occurs! very odd! what do you suggest I try next, as ever much appreciated. Andy

foot note…. to help get to the bottom of this I have replicated the problem on two more websites I administer that use eshop. One is on the same hosting provider another a different host. However the problem seems to be present in all three sites if the shop page is set to be the front page (static) what ever page is set to be the posts page shows up when any letter in the alphabet is clicked on using “eshop_list_alpha” shortcode.

Esmi maybe if possible you could try and replicate the issue with one of your own sites to see if we have perhaps found a bug or problem. Just a thought as I was wondering if its just me or perhaps a hard wored problem with the plugin, I dont suppose many folks use the shop page as a front page but becasue this site is only about selling products (plants in this case) we wanted customers to be presented with the shop page straight away, like walking into a shop which seems a pretty logical thing to do in some ways. Anyway Hope this is helpful t you in getting to the boottom of the issue.

We’ll look into this but for the time being, I suggest that you do not use this shortcode on a static front page. That seems to be the only scenario that triggers this particular bug. Internal Pages are fine.

We’ve has a really good look at this but have been unable to fix it as it appears to be a problem with the way that WordPress core handles query variables on the front page of a site rather than something in the plugin. All we can do atm is advise people not to use this shortcode on the front page of any site.

Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help. ??

Many Thanks for trying Esmi(and Co) I appreciate you putting in the time and effort, at least we know this issue exists and maybe in the future it might get sorted if the core files are jiggled about with by other wordpress guru’s. Anyway until such a time I will do as you suggest and not use the shortcode on the static front page, shame but none the less its still an excellent plugin, I’m sure I’ll find a way to utilze it on the front page, maybe using a different shortcode as I’m sure its only this one that casues the problem (I think!!) Do let me know if you discover any solutions in the future.

PS where can I make a contribution for your efforts.

maybe in the future it might get sorted if the core files are jiggled about with by other wordpress guru’s.

We’re still researching it to see if we can gather enough data to post a WordPress core Trac ticket.

I’m sure its only this one that casues the problem

I’ll try & test out some of the other product shortcodes this afternoon to see any of the others (especially those that incorporate pagination) are being hit by the same bug. If I do find anything I’ll update the relevant wiki page. I’ve already added a note about [eshop_list_alpha].

where can I make a contribution for your efforts.

I wasn’t expecting for you to have to go to such lengths but maybe its been a useful issue to have discovered for future use. I wonder if it is only shortcodes that use pagination? (that’s the word I was looking for I suspect) Its great to know that you are on the case and have updated the relevant pages for other users to tap into.

No problem have made a donation, only £10 I’m afraid but enough for a good cake or a few pints as a small although rather pathetic token of my appreciation. If I can be of any help in the futut=re do let me know and let me know how your pagination testing goes. yours Andy

Thank you very much for the donation. It is appreciated. ??
