How about "Featured Image Link"

I have been looking everywhere to find a plugin or easy way to add an external url link to the “featured image” in my blog post.
currently i can only link to an inserted image in the body of the post which does not show up in the excerpts, so my blog excerpt does not have an image but when you click it there is a full size image which when clicked links to the external url.
I need a way to do the same with the “featured image” which automatically generates a smaller image which shows in the blog post excerpts too.
the full size featured image in the blog post only shows the image in the lightbox and does not link to any external url.
