  • Yes, you would need a different IP address for each install of WordPress multisite if you are using the Domain Mapping plugin on any of them.

What? No! Marc, why do you think that?

You do not need separate IPs per Multisite at all. You can do it on one, just install them separately and map ’em separately.

If you’re using cPanel, you can do it by parking the mapped domain on top of where WP is installed.

So account #1 has example.com and you want to map mapper.com to it. Just park mapper.com on top of example.com

And then account #2 has twoexample.com and you want to map foobar.com? Same thing, just park it on twoexample.com

    Works fine.

Phew, thanks a bunch Ipstenu I’m very glad to hear that it’s possible

I’m building the first multi site now, I’ve built 3 before this, a while ago.
I’m having a few problems and I’m writing it all down so it will be easier in future.

What I’m noting today is the 2 websites I have mapped to the multisite are taking a long time to load.
Is that because the parking and mapping changes have to be cachede through the world and once the path is known it will get quicker?
or do I have a problem?

Sorry about the miss information : ( I was just following the instructions I read on rtcamp under the dedicated IP addresses section.

If you haven’t tested it yourself, it’s okay to say “I don’t think so based on what I read here…” and link ?? But keep in mind, every host is different.

What I’m noting today is the 2 websites I have mapped to the multisite are taking a long time to load.

No, it’s not to do with caching of the DNS and such. What kind of server are you on?

    Thread Starter Stingraynut

    (@stingraynut)

    It’s a shared server IP 117.55.227.86
Reverse IP 314 websites use this address.
I’ve only just begun to use this server, Support are cagey about the system although Uber are one of the top 3 hosts here. They told me “Though we cannot provide you with exact information about our hardware configurations, as advised previously, the servers run 6-core i7 Processors, with the RAM distributed evenly as needed across these platforms, which are all controlled and monitored virtually. Spam Assassin software is enabled for email, and all servers are monitored for virus protection, running active AntiVirus software 24/7. The routers are connected using 10 Megabit Uplink”

I hope it’s a problem with my installation of the multisite
    here’s what I do –
On the main site CPanel I have wildcard redirects * set in subdomains
I ‘add new site’ and create a subdomain ie domain1.mysite.com then using the domain mapping plugin I go to the dashboard of the newly added site -Tools/domain mapping – and add the url of the domain I want to use ie domain1.com and I set is as primary. Then I go to the CPanel of main site and park that domain.

I have domain mapping network enabled.
Have I missed something? or done something wrong?

Why do you think something’s wrong? Are you getting a specific error?

DNS lookup and waiting are both taking over 1 second, using firebug>net
    That is quite a delay!

Stingraynut, who is your registrar and/or where are the DNS resolving your domain(s) hosted?

I reported a very similar problem to my registrar yesterday after tracking down my performance problems to my registrar’s DNSes…

The initial answer from my registrar tech support was that they did not see any problems but after I provided them with additional information they confirmed that they are seeing the problem and have reported them to their systems admins.

I have not yet heard back from them and I am still seeing the problem about a day after I reported the problem/16 hours after they confirmed seeing the problem as well…

These are my last lookups time from one of their DNSes a few minutes ago:

    ;; Query time: 1768 msec
    ;; Query time: 1815 msec
    ;; Query time: 16 msec
    ;; Query time: 16 msec
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
    ;; Query time: 1497 msec

As you can see, sometimes I get very good response time and now sometimes the server is unreachable…

I am of course probing only one of their DNSes but 2-3 of their 4 DNSes are showing very slow lookup times like these…

Using Dig (Bind DNS tool), I have seen times over 2 seconds and WebPageTest suggested I even got lookups which took more than 5 seconds…

So, where are your DNSes hosted?

    Have a nice day!

DNS lookup and waiting are both taking over 1 second

As Nick said, that’s not going to be WP, that’s going to be your DNS host.

Just so you know I am still seeing times like these:

    ;; Query time: 1850 msec

    and

    ;; Query time: 1819 msec

and very good times such as these

    ;; Query time: 16 msec

    and also

;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Their best performing DNS usually has times around 70-80 ms (so it’s slower than the others when they have good response times) and the worst response time I have seen from it (it’s not scientific though, I just did many DNS lookups in a row) was around 500 ms… (which is kinda slow…)

I am a little reluctant to say their name without having confirmation from Stingraynut he is using the same registrar/DNS hosting but if they don’t fix it soon I won’t be so reluctant to say who they are…

I still haven’t heard back from them by the way…

    Have a nice day!

Nick, all my domains are registered at TPP Wholesale – they were moved there from Net Registry earlier this year.
My reseller account is at Uber Global https://www.uber.com.au
    It’s a 100CPanel account running from cbr1lcp09.webhosting.openconnect.com.au

I have recently moved to Uber because my main account, since 2007, is in the USA and my clients are in Australia. I was looking for faster page loads. I completed a new single wordpress installation there (Uber Global) today.

I’ve just tested the multisite and the new wordpress website and a similar wordpress website of mine hosted in the USA, using https://tools.pingdom.com
I normally use https://www.webpagetest.org but it can’t seem to find any websites at this moment!
The results for the DNS are not good
    Multisite
    DNS 3
    Connect 364
    Wait 491
    Receive 725
    Total 1.58 seconds

New WordPress site also at UBER
    DNS 410
    Connect 730
    Wait 1.99 !!!!
    Receive 639
    Total 3.77

    US hosted wordpress site
    DNS 215
    Connect 328
    wait 386
    receive 25
    Total 954

None of those results are satisfactory !!

Where is the delay? at the registrar? or is the website slow to send/receive the dns lookup?

what sort of info did you send your registrar?

    Rob

    Thread Starter Stingraynut

    (@stingraynut)

The Multisite figures above are incorrect (tested wrong url)
    The multisite master url –
    dns 216connect 319
    wait 2.63
    receive 320
    total 3.27

and one url connected to Multisite –
    dns 128
    connect 148
    wait 2.46
    receive 398
    total 3.134

It seems it’s the ‘Waiting’ that takes up a lot of time.

It’s not inherently Multisite. My ‘wait’ is in milliseconds. This may be your server or your server’s network speed.

    (@stingraynut)

I think you’re right, one site I tested has nothing on it at all and still had a long dns lookup. I have contacted the registrar and the Server support.
The registrar tells me “The issue lies with the Name Servers which are external. You would need to contact the hosting provider who are managing your Name Servers as you have domains registered with us however the Name Servers used are external”
I’m waiting for a reply from the server support, close to 24hrs now. Their support has been good for several months, the delay is unusual.
