Child theme template disappeared

  • I was working on my child theme style.css to fine tune some code after which i saved the changes. Then the website formatting disappeared. I checked the child theme and it was no longer listed as a theme. There was a message at the bottom of the themes page that said that the template was missing. I used ftp to open the child style.css and it was completely empty. I had an older copy less 600 lines of code that I had recently entered. I uploaded the older version and the child theme now works but with major formatting lost. Is it a common occurrence for the stylesheet contents to completely disappear?

  • How were you updating your CSS file?

    1. If this was offline in a test environment (the preferred way), then you should still have the file and be able to upload again.
    2. If this was in the WordPress Dashboard under Appearance → Editor, then your host should be able to help you determine why the file didn’t save (such as a permission issue).
    3. If you were editing in an FTP transfer agent such as a Filezilla, then your host probably timed out the connection and closed it before you saved.
