• Is there a problem with editing the .css directly if I don’t manually update twentyfourteen? Does WordPress automatically update the theme thereby overwriting my changes?

I have read in numerous postings that it is best not to change style.css directly but rather use a child theme. I set up a child theme but found it very cumbersome to work with. I went back to making changes directly in the twentyfourteen theme.

As long as WordPress does not automatically update the theme I don’t see what the issue is. Once I have everything working the way I want I would not want to upgrade the theme.

I noticed that on one occasion WordPress automatically updated my version of WordPress! So this made me wonder if it might automatically update the theme as well.

Never edit the Twenty Fourteen theme. It is the current default WordPress theme and having access to an original, unedited, copy of the theme is vital in many situations. First create a child theme for your changes. Or install a custom CSS plugin.

Not automatically but it is imperative that you keep the 2014 theme updated.

Please stop. At some point, you may introduce an error that brings your site down and the only option will be to upload a fresh copy of the theme – overwriting all of your changes.

So this made me wonder if it might automatically update the theme as well.

No – only minor core security updates. Not themes.
