• Hi all, I know this access denied problem is not new but mine’s kinda weird.

I have 2 wordpress account hosted with bluehost. These recent few months, I have intermittenly received this access denied/ip blacklist problem.
Bluehost was able to whitelist that ip on those few occasions but this time round, they said that they can’t because it wasn’t blacklisted on their server. And one weird thing is the ip being blacklisted (on all occasions) was not my public ip when I use https://bluehost.com/ip.

This sounds like a hack but my website is ok, no signs of extra content or being redirected to elsewhere. And if the ip being blacklisted is not my public ip, i don’t really understand why i get access denied problem.

    What i’ve done so far:
    – check for malware at sucuri : all’s green
    – check for unwanted codes as per this thread
    – checked my laptop and other mobile devices for threats but didn’t find any

I’m at wits end. Bluehost doesn’t seem to be able to help much. Does anyone have any insights to this problem and how can i get both my sites admin dashboard working again?

  • Are you using any sort of proxy?

    It’s setup as automatic proxy.

This link gives you YOUR ip address, the one YOU are using to access the internet at that moment (OR the address of you NAT modem/router/gateway)

It is the address of your website server which is being blacklisted.
Very likely it is on a shared hosting server, one of the other tennants is playing up, everyone gets blacklisted.
Have you considered changing hosting ?

    Ahhh… I see…

I’m kinda fed up already. The problem keeps coming back every few days. Bluehost doesn’t provide me a satisfying answer and told me there’s nothing they can do except to whitelist the IP each time it happens. Besides, when I did a research on this problem, it seems to happen a lot to bluehost and godaddy’s customers.

Any recommendations of a more reliable hosting?

Any recommendations of a more reliable hosting?

Per the Forum welcome, we close topics like this due to the amount of spam that they attract. The WordPress team has provided a list of a few recommended hosting providers. For more details and other recommendations, please search through the forums or via Google (or your preferred search engine).

As this is an on-going support issue, however, I won’t close the thread just yet. Just beware that a spam-ish flood of “pick me!” replies may soon arrive, and we may need to close the thread.

Well, if you’re connecting through a proxy and the proxy get’s its IP address blacklisted, then that could cause this issue. Also, if the website gets its IP address blacklisted, its likely that your browser would display is own form of error (such as a malware warning) instead of the standard error.

This could also happen if your ISP is giving you a dynamic IP. If your IP is changing frequently and you happen to get a previously blacklisted IP, then that could also cause this issue. I know that hosting companies blacklist IPs when there is legitimate reason (such as excessive login failures, the IP being involved in a DDoS attack, or other malicious abuse).

If you call Bluehost and provide them the IP address you’re using to connect to the website (whether through a proxy or not), they can check against the blacklist.
