I’m still having trouble… I’ve created the directory to put my wordpress in but when i go to sign in to my blog to change it i get a 404 error…

    I think i’ve ruined it … ??

Did you follow the step where you changed the location of WordPress in your current WordPress setup? Or – I hope not – is that the only thing you did?

What did you do, exactly? Did you just create the directory, then log into your admin and change the location of wordpress (WordPress URI) to the new directory without doing anything else?

ok… i logged into my wordpress before i posted on here and it said in there under the account settings that i could change the location.. so i put mydomain.com/blog and then it didnt do anything so i came on here and then went through the step by step location changing help thing and now its just gone completely doo lally on me.

the theme isnt there anymore its just normal text wen i try to log in.. and wen i put in my username and password to log into my blog it just says 404 error and my home page isn’t the blog anymore :-S im so confused!

sorry… my home page is the blog and it keeps trying to go through mydomain.com/blog/login.php and i think coz the files aren’t in there its not working…

i’ll try putting the files in the blog directory and see if that makes it any better…

but any other suggestions as to what i’ve done would be appreciated?

    Hi

Do you have access to Fantastico, or a Control Panel option with your hosting account? You could use that to alter where your blog resides.

in there under the account settings that i could change the location.. so i put mydomain.com/blog

    Please be more specific.

There are two spots in your options page where you can change the URL. There is “change your WordPress URI” and “Blog Address”. Which one did you change?

Since you can still see your site, but your admin area is giving you a 404, my guess is that you changed the “WordPress URI” value – which is bad. And also means you didn’t follow Handy’s directions.

Changing the value in the WordPress URI makes the database look for the necessary and requires functions and files that make wordpress work in whatever you put in that field. If you put in some random directory where there are no WordPress files, then you have made a mess.

If you changed the *Blog* URI, then you just have to log in and change it back to what it was. But like I said, it sounds like you did the other field.

IN that case, you’re going to have to log in to your host’s control panel, find phpMyAdmin and edit your database. CAREFULLY. To point to the old directory.

Here is an excellent step-by-step tutorial on exactly how to do it. *FOLLOW* the instructions carefully.

After you’ve changed it back, follow Handy’s link and *follow* the instructions carefully on how to do that.

    Hope that helps you out.

I did do what you said and I did that before I was told about the instructions. When I looked on the instructions i realised i had gone wrong. But that’ll teach me to fiddle before I’ve asked the experts!! LOL

    thanks for your help

I’m in the process of cleaning it up now ??

    Thanks
    again
