• Hi guys,

I am very new to this so bare with me please. I just purchases a WP theme (Border) and for the last week my website and dashboard have been extremely slow, I was just curious if there was anything I might have done wrong or if there are any suggestions on how I could figure out what is causing it to be so slow so that I can try and fix the issue. I did install the Smush it plugin for the photos and the w3 total cache plugin but it doesn’t seem to have done anything to help speed it up.

    my site: https://www.ngphotography.ca

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!
    Natasha

  • Hi Natasha,

Even though you have compressed your images using Smush it, your file sizes are still in the 400-500KB range. The recommended size is 100KB. One thing you can do is use the jpg format which is generally smaller than the png format. What photo editor do you use? What resolution are you saving your photos? 72dpi is recommended for web viewing.

This might not be your only problem though. I would suggest deactivating your plugins and then testing your site speed. W3 Total Cache is not easy for newbies to use and can slow down your site if you don’t configure it right. And then one by one activate your plugins to see which one is slowing your site down.

If none of these suggestions work you can also contact your theme developer to see if they have any recommendations.

There are also lots of tutorials and blog posts about page speed. I found one that says a page should be 500kb or less and your home page is 6.3MB! Reducing your image sizes using a photo editor should help.

    Cheers, Stacy

Are you using GoDaddy? If so see the thread I started earlier.

    Hi Stacy,

I am just using the Save for web option in photoshop, it does resize it to 72dpi, normally it saves it in gif format though but you’re right the files often end up being around 5mb

    Thanks for your suggestions ??
