• Is there anyone working on a plugin that will allow a cron-ed backup using the 2.1 lossless XML export rather than the table dump?

  • Can you remind me: why would this be even remotely useful?

As a way to backup your blog? If this is the native format for import and export from WP 2.1, then it seems like it would be useful. Currently the main backup plugin runs through an sql dump.

Fair point, thank you. I’m a couple of versions behind and as a result didn’t even know that WP has moved towards XML.

Gotta admit that I prefer the idea of the sql dump. If you have extra tables created due to plugins, that’s the way to get the data for them.

For you that makes sense, but if I’m not using any plugins which generate extra tables, then the xml makes the most sense for me. But given that this is going to be WordPresses main import/export, it seems only natural that this be an option for backing up.

There’s a note in trac to this effect. It may be an enhancement at some future point.

Cool. This discussion has gone on long enough I feel fairly sure no one has leapt on this for a plugin.

It’s not a bad idea for a plugin. You can set a pseudo cron to run an XML backup once a day. I’m actually fooling around with pseudo crons just so I can learn how to implement them (you never know when it can come in handy). Maybe I’ll get around to making it run a backup.

That would be awesome man. I’ve emailed the guy who maintains the wp-db-backup plugin but have heard no response from him. If you can get something running, please post here and let me know!

It shouldn’t be all that hard to do. You could have it email the XML file to you on some kind of recurring basis.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, Otto. Unfortunately this is going to have to wait until I have the time to do it. Could be a little while.
