Categories, Previous Page links not working

When I click a category link or the “previous page” at the bottom of my (custom-built) front page, the URL looks right (“/category/news”, “/page/2”, etc), but the posts don’t change to reflect the category or page function–it just shows the front page with the most recent posts. What am I missing here?
