    Hi,

I was wondering if there was an official skinny version of jetpack.

I only use 2 features from jetpack
    1. Publicise – because even though there are other plugins that offer a wider sharing range, having tested them they often send through hundreds of cookies, don’t work as well, or require a subscription

    2. Sharing buttons – because seeing as jetpack is installed I may as well use it.

I’ve recently been having a memory leak issue since upgrading a lot of my plugins. Essentially the memory usage on the server goes up and up and up and eventually I need to reboot the server..
it started being every week or two but is now every day or two

I downloaded P3 to see if I could locate what the issue was.

In doing so it said that Jetpack was taking up about 45% of my overall page load times which considering how little I use of it is shocking.

No other plugin uses anywhere near that much – in fact the only other big one is W3 total cache which uses up to 20% (I ran many times at different times to try and judge)

Whilst Jetpack may not be causing the memory leak, I do want to shorten my page load times.

I’ve seen unofficial version of Jetpack but I would rather use a version I know would be supported by the actual Jetpack team.

Is there any version coming out?

    Howdy,

There is not an official “skinny” version of Jetpack nor is there a plan for one. With P3, I do suggest running it in manual mode and open your site in a private windows (so you’re not logged in). While logged in, Jetpack can load some additional elements that will make it seem to be using more resources than it would for a “normal visitor”.

Since Publicize requires a connection to WordPress.com account (since we handle all of the mess of having an “application” with all of the social media networks), the unofficial skinny versions won’t include this feature.

Have you disabled all other modules besides the two you use?

    Thanks!

Indeed they are all disabled except for maybe the additional widgets module as I was using them for a while then decided less is more.

I’ve actually had it go up to 60% of page load times now.

It is a shame there isn’t a smaller version of the plugin available but I do understand what you are saying around the applications with the social media networks.

I will try what you said with the manual loads to see if that changes things

Also in checking Jetpack there are suddenly loads of plugins activated that were deactivated before.. like beautiful math for example, however there were a couple I forgot I did actively use like the WP.com stats, because I like comparing them to the Google stats and the WP short links

but yes it seems an extra 15-20 that were not active before the interface change are now active.

I’ve deactivated most of them and will start reactivating them as I realise which ones I actively use.

If you had deleted and reinstalled Jetpack completely, that would account for the module activation (information on what modules are active or not is not retained if you delete the plugin outright).

As for the percentages, it is good to note that P3 only accounts for plugins by a percentage. In other words, if you’re running only the P3 plugin, it will self report that it is taking up 100% of the plugin load time, etc. It doesn’t take into account your theme which can play a major role in site speeds.

We are working on making Jetpack more efficient and not trying to pass the buck, only frame the data from P3 a bit.

    Cheers.

There is a tab on P3 that looks at Theme vs wordpress vs all plugins

plugins take up 79% of my site load time

of that 79%, 60% of it is taken up by jetpack

so 47% of my overall site time is Jetpack :/

but unfortunately this still isn’t telling me where the memory leak is coming from and I doubt it is jetpack but at least I am more aware of what is doing what on the site and can make efficiencies where possible

You have already helped me by pointing out something that I was not aware of (all the plugins being active)

before the face lift I had to manually turn the plugins on if I wanted them on – it seems when the facelift came in there was a chunk that turned themselves on.

Just installing the update which I have been notified was released today too.. which is odd because I thought 3.1.1 had already been released and I had updated…

I’ll continue testing and hopefully make the overall thing more efficient

I look forward to further jetpack developments – thank you!

oh I forgot to add – turning off the extras I didn’t use has reduced the overall impact of jetpack in a few tests it has been 35-45 and hasn’t gone back up to the 60% it was before

interestingly though the plugin impact on the site has gone up above 79% for the first time to 83%

Perhaps one of the things attributed to jetpack was actually reducing another plugin

good news is page load times seem to be greatly reduced by turning off those extras too – so again, thank you for pointing that out to me

now if I can just find what is causing the memory leak hehe

We’re working on a lot of speed enhancements right now, so we’re looking to make 3.2 an improvement over what you have today too.

    Cheers!

    Excellent

Managed to solve the other issues as well (not jetpack related thankfully)

    Keep up the great work!
