• Fresh install on UNIX server, and I reinstalled (after clearing database files) and the same problem exists.

When going to manager Categories in the admin – ../wp-admin/categories.php cannot be displayed.

Problem occurs in both IE and FF. Reuploaded files, problem still exists. Am awaiting any server log errors from host, but am curious if this is a common issue. I have various other sites on the same server running WP fine.

    Sorry – v2.1

Pending confirmation that this resolved it, I followed this thought:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/104339

And the categories management now loads.

I am also having this problem. Upgrade to 2.1. Everything else works properly. I’ve reuploaded the file. I’ve tried both with and w/o www. still get “can not be displayed”.

I have also tried setting permissions at 777 to rule that out.

    Suggestions?

I have the same problem…. tried 777ing… no joy. Someone else mentioned it may be an Apache directives problem. No problems evident on the server. Firefox offers a download prompt of the page – IE7 just says ‘no can do’.

    Any help would be grrrrreat!

I’m experiencing the same thing, both with an upgrade and a fresh installation. Removing the www didn’t help. Someone else suggested adding a category via the ‘write post’ page and then she was able to access category.php, but that didn’t work for me either.

I would love to have this resolved. I reverted my upgrade to an old version for now.

I have a dedicated server. My server specs:

    PHP 4.3.11
    MySql 4.0.27 standard
    Linux x86_64
    4gb ram
    Apache 1.3.34
    cpanel

Mine comes and goes. Please someone, we need a fix!! ??

I am also having this problem. When I access /wp-admin/categories.php the Apache error log shows:

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x096b4e18 ***
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x09c12758 ***

[Wed Feb 14 14:33:06 2007] [notice] child pid 27144 exit signal Aborted (6)

    Configuration:

    Linux library.ust.hk 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp #1 SMP Mon Sep 25 17:28:02 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    Apache/2.0.52

    MySQL version 4.1.20

    WordPress version 2.1

Fresh install – everything else seems to be working in my non-exhaustive testing. No plugins activated. Default Theme.

    Can anyone troubleshoot this?

FIXED for me. I finally tried the advice redbox had received, to “Someone else suggested adding a category via the ‘write post’ page and then she was able to access category.php”. I did that and categories.php then populated/appeared for me.

Re Spode’s solution: I did this and then published the post. Still could not access categories in admin.

I then did it again but did NOT publish the post. Instead I typed the cat name and clicked “add” then went straight to the manage>categories page. It seems to work now.

Update: I went back and created a new post. Published it. Once again I could NOT access manage>categories. I tried again to add cat from a new post w/o publishing the post. Once again I could access manage>categories.

    This is silly.

Well, mine seems to have fixed itself by that method… add category via Write Post – THEN my ‘manage categories’ started behaving.

I had the same problem. Adding a category from the Write Post page fixes the problem, but only temporarily. As soon as you go back to manage categories and remove the category you just added it’s back tot he same old. Definitely need a fix on this one.
