    Hi,

Upon upgrading Better Font Awesome from 0.9.7 to 1.0.0 I get an error when attempting to activate BFA:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STATIC, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or ‘$’ in {snipped}/public_html/wp-content/plugins/better-font-awesome/better-font-awesome.php on line 134

I am able to downgrade to 0.9.7 with no errors.

    Thanks for any insight,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Hmmm, odd. I just installed from the WP.org using the same setup you have and everything is working fine.

Based on that error, my first guess would be that the download/install process didn’t complete properly. Can you try deleting the plugin and reinstalling it please?

If that doesn’t work, then it could be a PHP or server issue, in which case it would be very helpful if you can get me info on your host, PHP version (you can run this plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordpress-php-info/), and anything else you think would be helpful.

Definitely let us know either way. Thanks!

Update: I just did a bit more research and it looks like this may be a result of using PHP 5.2 or lower. I’ll work on a quick fix for this, hopefully for early next week.

In the meantime, however, you should really talk with your host and upgrade your version of PHP. You can read more about the various version here: https://w3techs.com/blog/entry/php_version_5_3_is_now_the_most_used_version_just_ahead_of_5_2

    Hi Mickey,

    Thanks for the quick reply!

    Here’s what I just did:
    1) Deactivated 0.9.7
    2) Renamed the old plugin on the site
    3) Downloaded (and unzipped to verify good download) 1.0 from site
    4) Uploaded that fresh download to the site
    5) Activated and … I got the error.

    Some additional tech. details:
    Host: BlueHost
    PHP version 5.2.17
    MySQL version 5.5.37-log
    cURL version 7.24.0

    FIXED:
I had the option to bump to PHP 5.4 so I took it and that bumped PHP to version 5.4.30.

That allowed the pluging to be activated!

So it must be an issue with PHP 5.2…

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

IF it’s supposed to work with PHP 5.2 and you need me to do any testing, let me know.

Ah! I was typing my previous reply when yours came in.

    Yes, it was PHP 5.2…

I upgraded and it’s working now.

    Thanks again,

    Mike
