Hooray! Benny is here. But OMGWTFBBQ!? WordPress 4.0 broke everything?

    Don’t Panic!

This thread contains the known issues with plugins and themes found in 4.0. Please read this WHOLE topic and come back and check again later, as it will be updated.

Remember to be calm, be patient and be respectful. Volunteers are out here to try and help you, but we need your help too. All of the normal forum rules still apply. Remember, you are just as important as everyone else.

If your post doesn’t show up right away, please be patient. With the higher than normal post volume, more posts get flagged as spam by our auto-spam tool. We’re working hard to keep the queue clear, but making multiple posts slows us down, as we have to go back and check if you already posted. Post once.

    • Do use proper capitalization in post titles and body. Punctuate your sentence properly and humanely, it helps us read.
    • Do use descriptive subject lines. “All permalinks broken since 4.0” is much better than “Augh! Help ASAP! This version is terrible!”
    • Do describe the problem clearly. Explain what you’re seeing, include error messages and link to screenshots if needed. Linking to your site, if the problem is on the front-end, also helps.
    • Do be patient. We know it sucks to be down, but posting multiple times doesn’t get you help any faster.
    • Do make your own topic unless you are using the exact same version of WordPress on the same physical server hosted by the same hosts with the same plugins, theme and configurations as the original poster. You may find it weird, but it will be easier for us to help you specifically if you have your own topic.
    • Do mark your topic as resolved when it’s fixed so we know not to come looking there anymore.
    • Do remember you’re not alone.

Also keep in mind that not liking the direction of WordPress’s design does not a bug make. If you don’t like a feature, please don’t make a series of posts complaining about it. Look and see if someone already did, and post there, or consider joining the process earlier on (like in Beta or even test via SVN). What you’re seeing today is the result of thousands of hours of work and testing, and unless something is outright broken, it’s highly unlikely to be changed.

    Again, before you post:

Make sure you’ve read the entire Master List post – and the New Features in 4.0 Codex Articlehttps://codex.www.ads-software.com/Version_4.0

Go to your own install’s about page – https://example.com/wp-admin/about.php – to see what’s new.

And then make sure you’ve tried…

    • Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
    • Deactivating all plugins (yes, all) to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old
    • Switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you can’t log in to change themes, you can remove the theme folders via FTP so the only one is twentyfourteen. That will force your site to use it.
    • Manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file of 4.0 (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server. Read the Manual Update directions first.

    NOT A BUG

My layout is all weird on the Dashboard

Flush your cache. If you’re using server caches, or a plugin, flush them too, especially Memcached/APC stuff. They can be sticky.

The Plugin Update popup box (modal) looks weird and doesn’t show up properly

Again, flush your cache. Browser caches sure can be stubborn things sometimes. The problem here is that you’re still seeing the “old” CSS code. Flushing the browser cache and restarting the browser *will* fix this. We promise. ??

I have a plugin that adds options to the media library and now it’s not working! (also: What happened to the media library!?!)

The Media Library defaults to a new, grid, view. This means if you’re using a plugin like the EWWW Image Optimizer that adds in more information, the content may not be visible on the main library view. This is not a bug. The decision was made to make the grid view very simple and basic, allowing you to click on the image to get more information. As time goes by, more plugins will customize that view, but for now you may need to toggle to the LIST view to see it.

At the top-left of the Media toolbar is a button to switch back to the old list view. When switched to the old list view, the button to switch back to the grid view moves to the right.

    The post/page editor is ‘weird’

The post/page editor now auto-expands as you type (it’s a bit more complex than that, but that’s the basic). Previously, the editor had its own scroll bar. This means that if you write a huge post, you need to scroll all the way up to return to the Publish button, categories, tags, etc.

Work-around: Click in the editor and cmd/ctrl-up/down to move to top/bottom of editor content quickly. Click out of the editor and cmd/ctrl-up/down to move to top/bottom of the whole page.

When the editor is larger than the fold, it cannot be scrolled up by highlighting text, due to how the editor toolbar follows the primary scroll.

Work-around: Highlight and scroll outside of the editor window to move the primary scroll instead.

The theme customizer moved my options around

They changed the default priority for Customizer sections to 160 from 10, which means more ‘priority’ was given to WP defaults vs plugins. It’s okay.

My admin panel is now in a different language!

If you have tried a different language in the past, WordPress might have saved that in an option and now is using that to display the admin screen in that language. Go to the Settings->General panel (you may need to translate a bit for this) and scroll to the bottom. There is an option named “Site Language” here. See what it is set to. Change it to what you prefer and click the red Save Settings button.

    KNOWN ISSUES

Media doesn’t remember what I want it to be linked to

Prior to 4.0, the last “Linked to” option chosen when inserting media persisted as a default for future inserts until it was next changed. This was handy for bloggers who always linked to the attachment page or chose a custom link when inserting media. In 4.0, “Media File” is now a persistent default for “Linked to,” and changes to it do not “stick” as they did prior to 4.0.

There is a ticket for this: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/23847

PHP Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Session_Tokens’ not found

This is a symptom of an incomplete update. Specifically, the “root” files were not updated. If you were using any form of non-standard update method or script, please remove it or do not use it in the future. The built-in one-click updater in WordPress will not cause this issue, or it will prevent the error from occurring and breaking your site.

To fix this error, you need to perform a manual upgrade, and be certain that ALL files are updated. Instructions can be found here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

Quick version: Download a fresh copy of WordPress from this site. Then replace all the files in your installation with the files from this ZIP. However, do not delete the files in your install first. Things like the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php file must remain intact. Only replace the files in the wp-includes, wp-admin, and the root directories. If in doubt, please follow the instructions on the codex exactly.

    Installed plugins disappear:

Some users are experiencing a problem with installed plugins disappearing after updating to WordPress 4.0. The cause for this is not yet known but an active ticket can be found here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/40-upgrade-makes-all-plugins-disappear

Fatal error: Call to undefined function hash() in [directories]/wp-includes/session.php on line 64

Some users are experiencing the above error when logging in after updating to WordPress 4.0. To correct the issue, ask your hosting provider to install PHP’s Hash module. Initial discovery: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/updated-and-got-fatal-arro

    REPORTED OOPSIES

    Themes

    * Thesis 1.8.5 has assorted issues involving comments disappearing and reports of 500 server errors. Thesis has a fix for this.

    Reported fix instructions:

NOTE: You must be using version 1.8.5 before deploying this fix; if you’re still using an outdated 1.x version, then you must update Thesis first.

    1. Using FTP, navigate to the /wp-content/themes/thesis_185/lib/classes/ folder on your server.

    2. Edit the comments.php file in the classes folder at line 187, instead of

    $wp_query->comments_by_type = &separate_comments($wp_query->comments);
    $_comments = $wp_query->comments_by_type['comment'];

    you now write

    $wp_query->comments_by_type = separate_comments($wp_query->comments);
    $_comments = &$wp_query->comments_by_type['comment'];

The only change is moving the “&” to the $_comments-variable really but that seems to cause the 500 internal server errors.

Once you’ve followed these steps, check to see if your comments are now being displayed correctly.

    Plugins

    * Comprehensive Google Map Plugin – Breaks Media buttons
    * Genesis Title Toggle – Breaks Media buttons FIXED IN LATEST VERSION
    * Markdown Quicktags – Breaks media buttons
    * All in One SEO pack – Breaks media buttons, but an update to fix this is available. Update the plugin.
    * WordPress IPSConnect – Causes every link to have an “Are You Sure?” screen, due to nonce changes in WordPress 4.0. Any plugin that bridges users between different apps like this is likely to have the same problem until it has been updated.
    * WPML Media – Uploading any media leads to an error and a large amount of identically named (and corrupted) files. Upgrade to resolve.

    Hosting

    * GoDaddy – Due to a server configuration, some updated WordPress files may have been prevented from being copied over, resulting in a white-screen-of-death or an error message similar to the following:

    Warning: require_once(/.../wp-admin/includes/image.php)
[function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory
    in /.../wp-admin/includes/admin.php on line 28
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required
    '/.../wp-admin/includes/image.php'
    (include_path='.:/usr/local/php5_3/lib/php') in
    /.../wp-admin/includes/admin.php on line 28

If this happens, try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. Performing a manual update will fix the problem of missing files.
