    What I want to happen

All product images scale proportionally, without cropping. I have products of various shapes and therefore product images of various dimensions, so not cropping is important for users to be able to see the entire product.

    The problem I get instead

Product images get cropped to a square, even after cropping is disabled in every setting I can find.

    Steps to reproduce the problem

In Virtue Theme Options > Shop Settings > Product Image Sizes, I have turned off both “Enable Product Image Crop on Catalog pages” and “Enable Product Image Crop on product Page.”

While I’m there, I noticed the theme options page recommends a width of 468px for single product images and a width of 270px for catalog images. So in WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Product Image Sizes, I set single product images to 468 × 468, and catalog images to 270 × 270. There was no recommendation for product thumbnail size, so those are 150 × 150. I made sure the “hard crop” checkboxes are disabled.

I regenerated all my thumbnails. I check a couple catalog and single product pages, and all the thumbnails uploaded so far are still cropped to a square.

I’ve installed all the latest updates for WordPress, the Virtue theme, and the WooCommerce plugin. My web host uses the usual LAMP software stack, with PHP v5.5. I’ve already taken a look at this thread about editing $catimgheight, but that only fixed the thumbnails on the Shop page (which lists the product categories). Even after rebuilding the thumbnails again, catalog and single product images get cropped to a square.

  • Did you also change your image settings in settings > media?

And can you post a link to a page with the product images?

    Hey,
Your steps are correct. Can you post a link? I just tested on a server went through each step and it worked fine.

PS I think thumbnails are good at 90×90. Those are the small images below your main product image if you have images in your product gallery.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I’d thought the options WP Admin > Settings > Media would only affect the images posted to Pages and Posts. But just to be sure, I also set the medium image size to 468px and the thumbnails to 150px, and made sure the checkbox for cropping images was disabled. (I like 150px better than 90px, unless that just won’t work…) But that hasn’t helped either ??

Here’s the shop overview page, which doesn’t seem to be cropping the images. And here’s a product category page (with only one product having an image uploaded so far), and the single product page.

Have you tried adding a new product and uploading a new image?

What plugin are you using for regenerating thumbs?

This to me is interesting.. you have this image being resized: https://swiss.andrew.tosk.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/GSG-522-RIS-AEG-270×253.jpg

And it’s not square so it wasn’t done by the theme. Meaning woocommece cropped the image. So have you tried adjusting your woocommerce settings to test.

Yes, I’ve disabled image cropping in WooCommerce settings, and then tried rebuilding thumbnails or uploading new images.

Yes, I’ve tried deleting and uploading images as well.

The thumbnails plugin I’ve been using is AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild, which when you use has set of checkboxes for:
    thumbnail (150×150 )
    medium (468×468 )
    large (1200×1200 )
    shop_thumbnail (150×150 )
    shop_catalog (270×270 )
    shop_single (468×468 )
    widget-thumb (80×50 cropped)

“widget-thumb” is the only one that says “cropped,” but I don’t know where I’d change that since I can’t find anything that has a “widget thumbnails” setting, and anyway I haven’t yet run into any thumbnails on the site which are only 80 × 50 pixels.

I would try using a different plugin for regenerating those plugins… https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Ah! That did it. I don’t know why the old plugin was doing it wrong, but Regenerate Thumbnails does it right.

Thanks a lot for your help, both of you.

    Resolved.

I had the same problem. After the last update the photos were all hard cropped even thought I had made sure it was de-selected. I tried adding new product and it still hard cropped them. I regenerated the thumbnails usinging the above mentioned plug in and it didn’t fix the problem. Any ideas. I am using a “retro” theme by Olegnax.

Hey bigboxbuddy, this forum is for Virtue theme only so I wouldn’t really know how to help you. Sorry.

I’m opening this thread up again. I’m noticing a problem again.

Images look fine for the individual product pages, and the list of products within a category. But the shop overview page, which lists available categories is hard-cropping the category thumbnails.

I haven’t had a chance to work much on my website in the last month, so I’m not sure if this was always the case and I just missed it, or if I changed something that broke thumbnails again. Or maybe something changed during a WordPress or theme update. But I’ve already made sure that thumbnail cropping is disabled in WooCommerce, Virtue Theme, and WordPress Media settings. And I’ve tried rebuilding the thumbnails with the plugin Janet4Now suggested.

    Hey,
The category thumbnails are automatically cropped by the theme, If you want to change you will have to use a child theme and change a file… see here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/catalogue-image-cropping?replies=6

In the future just post a new topic please.

use a regenrate thumbnail plugin. simple and all is well ??

    I have the same problem,
I have taken off the crop in Woo Commerce and I don’t mind the crop in the catalogue but when you click on the image to buy it still stay cropped.

These are photos so i don’t want the image cropped.

    Any suggestion?

I’ve tried regenerate thumbnails and tried checking and unchecking all the hard cropped settings

trevorbuchan, in the theme options > shop settings. Have you turned the theme crop off?
