• Hope it’s okay for me to link this site https://www.jessicaannmedia.com/category/blog/ – it isn’t mine, but I came across it today and the sidebar caught my attention. For instance, in the ‘What’s new’ section you can click on it to expand that section, and click again to close it.

I’d like to use something like that for my site. Does anyone know what this sort of sidebar or widget is called so I can search for it? (I don’t even know if it should be called a widget, since it’s technically just the way they are displayed, but anyway…)

  • Yes, in the WordPress world it is a widget.
It could be done by a plugin, more likely provided by the theme. It uses javascript to toggle “hide” on and off.
Suggest that you use a browser inspector and learn all you can about the site.

I did inspect it in Firebug, but can’t see anything out of the ordinary in the HTML and CSS. If it uses JS I don’t know which JS script it uses.

Is there a specific name for this sort of thing so I can search the web for it? I was thinking ‘drop down menu’, but that expands the menu upon mouseover whereas this expands by click (and moves the rest of the page down to accommodate, instead of layering over).

Here, have a look on this. It is something similar to which you are looking for. Its done with the help of javascript:
