I recently experienced a problem related to UptimeRobot site monitoring with a site I run on a Dreamhost server. UptimeRobot was being blocked. The problem was resolved, and was unrelated to Wordfence, but Dreamhost support said this:

“…I see that your site is using a particular plugin that is know to slow sites down a bit if the site is not properly configured or optimized. The plugin “Wordfence” is known to slow down sites because of the way it works. It will not move on to the next process until it is completely done checking the process it is at that particular moment. You can try disabling it for testing purposes. Or you can try optimizing your site a bit more to see what is causing Wordfence to slow down. I would also recommend installing and activating “Wp-super-cache” to help with your sites overall performance.”

Again, the problem I reported was unrelated to performance or Wordfence. But it looks like Dreamhost support is seeing sites with Wordfence using more server resources than expected. While this may be the case, I’m not sure everything they’re saying about Wordfence is entirely accurate.

This isn’t a support request. I just thought you might want to know what Dreamhost support is saying about Wordfence.

  • Thanks for the information. While I know that running Live Traffic View or scanning images as executable can cause additional load on the server, I’m surprised they would single us out. Every one who works on servers for a living knows there are many things that can contribute to a site slowdown, including a bad hosting provider. I use dreamhost on a few of my sites and haven’t had that problem there and wouldn’t want to speculate on it in the first place.

Wordfence has always been very open and approachable by any company that has questions. If Dreamhost would like, they can contact us at any time through our website. Its always great to get feedback and we play well with others. ??

    Thanks again!

We’re seeing sites with poorly configured WordFence setups running slowly. Just the same as we see sites with badly configured caches :/ Nature of the beasts.

In a few cases, people have scans that never finish, and while we DO tell them to read your helpful FAQ ( https://support.wordfence.com/support/solutions/articles/1000011129-my-scans-don-t-finish-what-can-i ) many times people are setting things up to run longer than a shared host would reasonably allow which causes the site to slow down. Realistically, the scan WILL slow you down a bit, as we said “if the site is not properly configured or optimized”

No caching, big sites, big scans, shared hosting? Sure, that can slow you down. That’s often why we say ‘Okay, let’s turn off Security/BackupApps and see if that speeds things up!’ The reason we start there is we probably saw your site was making a lot of self-reflective calls, and that’s usually a sign that it’s asking itself to do a lot of work.

If you’d like to share your domain, or email me at mika.epstein AT dreamhost.com, I may be able to pinpoint exactly why we identified it as a problem.

Thanks Ipstenu-DH. I’m sure the user will really appreciate the help. As I mentioned, I haven’t had any problems with my DH site ??

Thanks for the offer, Mika, but like I said, the original problem was actually unrelated to performance, and it has since been resolved in any case. However, I’ll keep all this in mind if and when I encounter performance issues on any of my Dreamhost-hosted WordPress/Wordfence sites.
