    WordPress permalinks don’t correspond to actual files on the site. The page is generated on the fly.

    And yes, everything does start at the main index.php file. From there it eventually goes to your theme, and it could be your theme’s single.php file or the theme’s index.php file, depending on the theme. Those usually call header.php, footer.php, and sidebar.php, although again, not necessarily.

    But there is no actual single file on your site that holds what you see in the browser.
