Jetpack Slideshow not working

I am trying to use the Jetpack Slideshow on my website but it doesn’t load any images at all. It just prints a message saying ‘The slideshow needs Javascript’. However, javascript is being loaded as I have checked the source code. The tiled Mosaic part of Jetpack works ok for rectangle, square and circle. I think this must be a javascript issue somewhere but I have no idea where to look as jquery is being loaded.
