My site was on a Hostgator VPS server. EWWW Image Optimize activated and worked flawlessly.

I switched to Nexcess shared server. I immediately received this error message:

EWWW Image Optimizer uses jpegtran, optipng, pngout, pngquant, gifsicle, and cwebp. You are missing: jpegtran, optipng, gifsicle. Please install via the Settings Page or the Installation Instructions.

    There is also this:

    Imagemagick ‘convert’: Missing

As requested, I clicking Debug and pasted the information to PasteBin:

    https://pastebin.com/Y7UujYgJ

I would like these errors fixed.

    Please help.

    Thank you.

Your new webhost is apparently using an operating system not compatible with the bundled binaries. If you can find out any information about what operating system they are using, we might be able to come up with something that works, but no guarantees. If all else fails, you can use the EWWW IO Cloud on any webhost, no problems.

I sent them (the host) the debug info after I sent it to you and they were able to figure it out. “There was an issue with the exec permissions”

    1. Could you take a quick peek at my site (https://film-book.com) and tell me if you see any issues, ways in which my site can be sped up, not just with pictures, but everywhere?

    2. I don’t have ‘Remove metadata’ selected. I read how you previously recommended this setting to another webmaster. Does that advice still valid?

    3. I want to get the best score on GTMetrix (I currently have an F for optimized images for FilmBook. I’m using the Bulk function to optimize older images as I type this.) that my sites can: FilmBook, ProMovieBlogger, and TrendingAwards. What steps can I take to do that through your plugin and through others?

    4. How does your plugin compare to Smush.it? Does it have compression features that Smush.it does not have?

Good to hear, I love it when people have helpful webhosts that don’t just bail out with the standard, “oh, we don’t offer support for third-party software…”

    1. I would recommend entering your site at https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ to see what else you can do. They have a lot of good resources there. GT Metrix is another good one that checks against Pagespeed Insights, and a couple others all at once.

    2. Yes, that is still a valid recommendation. Without it, you won’t get the green light on any of the testing sites.

    3. Generally, the defaults + the remove metadata option will get you where you need to be regarding images. There are things you can do with scripts and stylesheets, as well as caching too. I recommend the WP Super Cache plugin (W3TC is almost overkill, but if you’ve already got it set up, stick with what you have) for caching, and there is a service called Cloudflare that can deliver some awesome benefits in the script and stylesheet area. It can minify and combine all those files, much better than I’ve ever seen from any WP plugin. It also has a feature to load most of your scripts at the bottom so they are not blocking the rendering of your page.

Currently, your page is being slowed down by so many javascript/stylesheets that Pagespeed Insights can’t even analyze it for desktop rendering, so cloudflare is where I would start. Some webhosts have this as a built in option, but if not, it is possible to set it up yourself. It takes a little bit of work, but they have very good instructions, and very good support (and they offer a free plan that I use on all my websites).

    UPDATE: forgot to answer #4…

    4. EWWW IO wipes the floor with smush.it. While they mostly achieve the same results with the default options, EWWW IO can check conversion for savings (JPG to PNG, GIF to PNG, and PNG to JPG), it can generate webp images, and it has better PNG compression if you enable pngout.

Additionally, it has lossy PNG support via pngquant, but the biggest advantage is in the lossy JPG compression used by the EWWW IO Cloud service. It is powered by the incredible jpegmini technology, and yields some very impressive gains. Once you get all the scripts and such straightened out, I highly recommend looking into the cloud service, just for the lossy JPG ability. You can even keep all your GIF & PNG optimization local, and just enable the cloud service on your JPGs.

    1. I just used https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ for the first time yesterday.

    2. I’ll give it a try. Will it remove the title and alt text information?

    3. I’m using W3TC, I am running my sites through Cloudflare, and I am using MaxCDN as a CDN (set to work with W3TC). We are also using WordPress SEO. What do you think? Is this optimal or can you think of a better configuration?

    4. Why doesn’t the plugin have the “lossy JPG ability”? Is this the cloud service: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer-cloud/

    5. Did you notice a couple of WordPress versions back, this problem:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/image-title-disappears-after-upload-and-intial-edit?replies=11
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/missing-title-tag-of-images-in-galleries-in-35?replies=8

Why did they do this? They created extra work for webmasters regarding images, titles, and alt text.

Have you thought of adding a function to EWWW IO to counteract this? It would make your plugin even more robust. Your thoughts please.

    Thank you.

    2. no, that isn’t metadata, that’s important SEO information and is not stored inside the image.

    3. That sounds like a pretty good setup, but it somewhat depends on the options you are using with clouflare. In particular their JS/CSS/HTML minification, and rocketloader functions are things you should look into.

    4. You can use the EWWW IO Cloud with either version of the plugin. The one you linked is ‘cloud-only’, whereas the regular version would allow you to process JPG via the cloud, and others locally (or any combination thereof. Every tool that EWWW IO uses is freely available EXCEPT JPEGmini, because it is expensive and cannot be redistributed. JPEGmini costs $2400/year. By integrating it with the EWWW IO Cloud, we’re reducing the costs for everyone involved.

    5. No, i never experienced the first issue, but there are two different “titles” at work here. The one you enter originally is not really used, unless you insert a pdf, where it becomes the link text. The title attribute can be populated by clicking the edit icon on an image, but I as the developers said, it is a mouseover text only, and is not used for SEO or accessibility. The alt text is the important field, not the title attribute. At any rate, that is outside the scope of this plugin. I have plenty to work on without going outside what I’ve defined as my scope (optimizing the actual image files).

    3. I instituted rocketloader as you suggested (I already had JS/CSS/HTML minification enabled) and my YSlow Grade jumped from a D to a B. Thanks you the heads-up.

    5. Thanks for the title/alt text information. I will be sure to tell my team about the importance of Alt Text.

    A problem has occurred.

I used the EWWW Image Optimizer on TrendingAwards.com and this occurred to a large portion of the site’s images:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/5endlcc68odl2o7/Screenshot%202014-11-10%2017.17.06.png?dl=0

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/pzbhni68q2cswkx/Screenshot%202014-11-10%2017.17.49.png?dl=0

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/sxpcnmakfbsy6yt/Screenshot%202014-11-10%2017.18.57.png?dl=0

What happened to these images and all the other images that are not showing on the website now?

How do I reverse this and get the images to show?

The current EWWW Image Optimizer configuration on TrendingAwards:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/yyld7xvu669jdsi/Screenshot%202014-11-10%2017.21.52.png?dl=0

When I first used EWWW Image Optimizer, everything seemed to be fine. When I enabled “This will remove ALL metadata: EXIF and comments.” and ran EWWW Image Optimizer again, that seems to been the problems showed up.

That error means the files are just gone. EWWW IO doesn’t have any code to do that, sounds like someone either deleted a bunch of files, or another plugin is doing weird things. If you have a CDN plugin that removes the files after upload, that could cause something like this possibly.
