Word press set up

  • Hi,

    I hope you are well,

    I have just set up a website with wordpress and like the website design and functionality, so I am going also bring my main website over to word press. I wanted to design the site and then transfer the domain to minimize down time. I wanted to know the best way to go about doing this?
    -do I need to create another word press account?

    Glad to hear that you are going to use WP for your main site. Its a good decision, I don’t think you will regret it. You should not need to register an account to use WP. Just download the software and start working with it.

    No need to transfer your domain either, if you are with a good host, you should be fine running WP on their servers.

    I would build the site on m,y local computer, then when it was ready to go, upload it and import the database on your live site. I have a tutorial on installing WP on your local machine: https://xcartguru.com/tutorials/wordpress-tutorials/installing-wordpress-on-your-local-machine/

    You can also build it “in the wings” directly on your live server, just set it up in a subdirectory or on a subdomain while you prepare.

    Yes, sorry it took me so long to respond. Just download WP and work with it wherever/however you like. That is the beauty of Open Source Software.

    I am probably being really daft, and I am sure answer is staring me in my face!

    I have an excising wordpress website and downloaded wp then. Will I need to re-download wordpress for the new website or is there a way for managing two websites from same account?

    You can use multisite, but in my opinion this is a complex setup if you are a beginner.

    WordPress is an application that runs on your server. It needs to be installed in a folder, and connected to your database. The only “account” is the one you create inside it once you have it installed.

    Unless you are talking about a wordpress.com account?

    Let me describe what I think you are doing, and what I think you want. You have WordPress installed on a hosting account and it is accessible at https://someurl.com

    Now you want to use it at https://someotherurl.com -you need to download and install it in this other hosting account. You can put it in a subfolder while you are building the new site, or build it on your local computer. Were you able to follow the tutorial I linked above?

    Sorry if I’ve not been clear in trying to explain what the end goal is. I have two websites one is hosted by wix the other by WordPress. The Wix was fine to start off with and really easy to use, but Wix is just not giving me some of the functionality and features I want the site to have. luxuryfit.co.uk The other is a WordPress site which I’ve just started building. It’s a fitness blog. freehomept.com

    I want keep both websites live and transfer the Wix site to WP.

    What I’ve just done is create a sub-domain on the c-panel. From there I was going to start building the site then transfer the domain from Wix. Is this a good way to go?

    It sounds like a fine way to go. I recommend this course, or even just building the WordPress site on your local computer. Either way is fine. When it comes time to transfer the domain name, it will take some work to update links and settings in WP, but this is unavoidable if you want to build it and then launch it later. (which is the best plan anyway)
