Short URLs and Permalinks

    I am intrigued but baffled by the short urls offered on each bookpage. Are they an automated form of permalink? Are they for copying and pasting in the place of the original page URL?
    I am not a programmer and am frightened by what I can find regarding customizing permalinks. Any guidance to simple clarifications of these areas will be appreciated.
