Wishful Thinking: WP Edit in Text Mode?

    Hi Josh,

    This is in all likelihood not possible, but oh, how great it would be if the WP Edit buttons were available in text mode, too!

    I mostly use text mode, but when I need a button, I have to switch to visual mode, and of course then my code gets all screwed up. To be honest, I’m at the point where I’m considering uninstalling WP Edit since it’s not exactly useful to me right now, but long-time use of the plugin, loyalty, and wishful thinking convinced me to write this message first.

    I’m sure there are others who only have limited knowledge of code and would appreciate the advantage of accessing the WP Edit buttons from text mode…

    Yes.. that is a very large request, indeed ??

    The editor is not setup in a way where I could simply switch over the functionality of the addons from the visual mode to the text mode.

    However… other addons can be written which perform only in the text mode. This is a possibility.

    But it leads me to the ultimate question…. Why do you only use the text view?

    I know the editor mangles code sometimes. But, there are ways where you can tweak the editor… and control how it processes the code when switching views.

    So I ask… what is the main reason you only use the text view? What specifically gets mangled?

    Thanks for getting back to me so soon, and for the detailed response!

    I mostly use the text view for a few reasons. One of them is that I use a lot of my own classes instead of the usual inline css to improve performance. Another is that a few of the plugins I use require me to have more manual control over classes/attributes/etc. And then some of the shortcodes I use work better in text mode — this would be where stuff gets mangled if I switch back and forth. And lastly, since I’ve started using text mode, I actually prefer it!

    You mention it’s possible to create buttons specifically for text mode — I think I read something about that in the Codex, maybe called quicktags or something? But that seemed beyond my skill level… Can you recommend an *easier* way?

    Yes, exactly. They are called “quicktags”.

    No worries, Julie.
    I’m working on my own customizations as well with the text editor.
    You got my mind thinking about it.
    All the mods I do to the visual editor… and never touch the text side of things ??

    Still, I’ll be curious if you use that other plugin… and how it works for you.

    Hi Josh,

    Apologies for taking so long to test out AddQuicktag. I finally got to it this week and felt compelled to come back and give you a big virtual hug. Fantastic plugin! It easily allowed me to do what I wanted, and more. Thanks so much for your help with this!

    Good job with the new updates to WP Edit, btw. The bulk feature works great and is very convenient.
