I am unable to log into the Dashboard after the auto update to 4.0 this afternoon. I am not getting an actual error when I attempt to login but when I enter the username and PW to my back end it just doesn’t go anywhere. It’s like a loop that redirects back to right where it is.

So far I have manually downloaded the 4.0 update, deleted everything on the root level except the ‘wp-config’ file and i deleted the admin and includes folders and replaced them with the 4.0 files. I wondered if it could be theme incompatibility like i saw suggested on another thread. So earlier i went into my ftp and renamed my theme but the default didnt take over, as one poster said it should. it just rendered a white page and i still wasn’t able to log in so i changed it back so at least my site was still up. I’ve tried to do my research and follow the recommendations on several threads before posting myself.

The last thing I saw suggested that I haven’t done is disable plug ins. I do not know how to do that except in the control panel but if someone can help me with how to do it i will try it next. I appreciate any help you can provide. My site address is erinjackson.net

I may sound like I know more than I actually do about these things just from reading so I will not take offense if you explain these solutions to me like I’m a child. ??

  • Deactivate all plugin: using FTP goto the plugins folder and rename it to something else like plugins-deactivated

I would do this and see if this helps

Thank you so much for your quick reply @crammy90.

That did not work for me but does it mean anything that i try to login into: https://www.erinjackson.net/blog/wp-login.php and then when i enter my info and click the login button the address turns into: https://www.erinjackson.net/blog/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.erinjackson.net%2Fblog%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1

Is that indicative or anything or was it always that way and I just didn’t notice?

Not indicative of anything, that just means it’s going to send you to /wp-admin/, the Dashboard.

In a different thread, you mentioned that you renamed the theme directory, but it left the site blank.

I just want to be sure, that means you changed /wp-content/themes/current-theme/ to /wp-content/themes/renamed-theme/ not that you changed the “themes” directory itself, right?

correct. i changed the name of just the theme i am currently using — that folder, not the ‘themes’ folder. I was able to get back in the back end by rolling back to the previous version via a backup.

I realized in visiting my hosting site that my database for my blog was at a negative capacity. i think that may be contributing to the problem. The initial reason i did the 4.0 update is because i was getting an error trying to add a new item to my gigpress calendar. i thought maybe i should check for an update and before i did that i saw that WP had an update so i did that first and that’s when it kicked me out of the dashboard.

Once i went back to the previous WP version and I went back into the calendar plugin and tried to add it again, I actually read thru the error it referenced the database. perhaps just one more thing could not fit on the server. i don’t know. i’m currently clearing some space to see if that helps to resolve things as i was not getting an actual login error. if i can reduce the db size i will try to add something to the plugin again and maybe manually do the 4.0 upgrade again to see if it works.

grasping at straws but at least i know i can get back into my site if i revert back again. Does any of this sound feasible to you as to why i might be having a problem?

I had more than one version of the blog pointed at the same database. i was using it to redesign a few months ago and never deleted it so maybe that’s why it was so full. i will check back in the morning. fingers crossed. i was/am at -50MB available storage space

Ah yeah, that definitely sounds like it was the problem. The plugin couldn’t save more data because the database was at capacity, then the updater couldn’t update the database for the same reason.

Once you clean things up, try optimizing the database by accessing it via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), checking all of the tables, and choosing “Optimize tables” from the pull-down menu.

ok great! glad that makes sense to you. i will try that in the morning. i keep reading about tables and i’m not certain what they are but i will try and learn tomorrow. ?? I did see a button called phpadmin in my host’s control panel so i will investigate tomorrow. I’ve been dealing with this for the past 13 hours. i need a break.

A table is a section of your database, for example your WordPress database has an _posts table, which holds all of your posts. ??

@macmanx – I just wanted to say thank you for your help. This morning my db problem was fixed and I went into myadmin and optimized the tables. If you have time, could you let me know exactly what that means? Is it something I should do on a regular basis? Either way I was able to add things to my calendar now so I guess I will try and do the update again now. Fingers crossed!

Update back to 4.0 successful! Hooray!

It’s oddly like a file system. When a row is deleted (like a spam comment, for example), that row remains but is now flagged as “deleted,” so it’s still taking up space. New rows (like new comments) start by replacing deleted rows rather than creating new ones.

When you Optimize a table, it completely removes all rows marked as “deleted,” thus freeing up all that space.

It’s not a necessary operation, since new data will replace delete rows routinely, but it’s still useful to run occasionally to free up unused space.

Awesome. Thanx so much. I deleted like 24,000 spam comments plus two development sites unused plug ins and themes so I bet there was a ton of space freed up. Really appreciate your help. This is great info.
