Date Showing as a numberic value

Hello I have created a custom field with the field type set to date. In the backend it seems to pick the date OK and everything seems to work fine, but it is adding a numeric value in the custom field. For instance for October 30, 2014 I am getting a value: 1414627200 added to the custom field. THis then shows on the front end. Is there a way to control how it displays this?
