• Yesterday about 5 pm EST my WP blog was just fine, and this morning all I’ve got is a “Error establishing a database connection” screen. I did nothing in the interim.

Just as the screen suggests, I checked my wp-config.php file. No problem there. I logged into cPanel and did a “Check” operation on the database. No problem there. I don’t want to “Repair” a db that looks fine unless there is a good reason.

I’m 99% sure I’m running 2.1.2, though I don’t know how to check. What is my next step?

  • Talk to your host, the database server is probably down.

I’ve posted an inquiry with support. But wouldn’t the Check operation in cPanel fail if the db server was down?

Sorry, I missed that you said that. Yes you would think the server is running if you can access the database via phpMyAdmin. So the DB_HOST is localhost (or anhosting uses something like remotemysqlhost)?

Yes, DB_HOST is localhost. I haven’t tried phpMyAdmin, just cPanel’s mysql interface.

Ok, I’m in phpMyAdmin. I knew it was around here somewhere. What should I check for?

Well just getting into phpMyAdmin tells you the database server is working.

Maybe your wp-config.php file got corrupt for some reason. Recheck it please.

No, I’ve rechecked. The WP-config file is the same, byte for byte, as the backup I made a couple weeks back or so when I upgraded from 2.1.1 to 2.1.2.

I’m getting support from the host now, and he suggested that I delete and recreate the db username.

Funny thing is I can’t see the user info anymore.

Good deal! Let us know if that works.

Also, please tell us the host you are using.

    I’m using Siteocity.

Yup. Turned out my user info had been flushed down the memory hole, though I have no idea why. Recreated the user and proper password, and now all is hunky dory.

“Hunky dory”? I think I’m dating myself there.

And I’ve got to say that while I’ve seen a lot of bashing of Siteocity since I’ve been with them(last September I think, right around the time the current owners bought the place), overall I’m pretty pleased.

Okay, now go upgrade to WordPress 2.1.3 and then everything will really be “hunky dory!”

    Thanks for the feedback.

Gosh. I went thru the upgrade from 2.1.1 to 2.1.2. I don’t think I like upgrading so much.

2.1.2 has security flaws that 2.1.3 fixes. It’s highly recommended that you upgrade.
