Building new site with parts from the old one

  • I’m exhausted trying to figure out how to build a site on a new host with the same url.

    So, here’s another idea. Build a completely new site on the new host with a new url.

    Is there a way to bring over some of the content? Can I cut and paste content from the backed up folder? I see images, I see some content. How could I do this without cutting and pasting all the files? I’m trying to by-pass dealing with changing database names and such, and then trying to figure out how to delete particular files or content.

    Is it possible?

    So, for example, let’s say I have an About me, portfolio page with 50 examples and a blog. I’d like to keep About me, 10 of the 50 pages of examples, and 10 of 15 blog posts.

    How do i do that? Is it possible by using the files from the backup? Are they all in Wp-content.php?

  • No matter which way you decide to go (same URL or different URL), it just isn’t that hard, in my experience.

    I’ve done it by hand using these instructions:

    And I’ve done automated with this plugin:

    I’ve even done it on the same site via a subfolder install, essentially flipping from one subfolder to another using this technique:

    On the other hand, I’ve watched people cut and paste their way into a lot of needless grief.

    Again, this is just one man’s opinion.

    Thanks. I just downloaded the database again. When I spoke to Name.com they said I’d have to change the name, the config, etc. and even then it might be dicey. But I’m willing to give it a whirl.

    How do you use something like duplicator if you can’t sign into the wordpress admin on the new site? When I sign in to my wpadmin, I go to the current host/website due to the DNS servers. So, do you copy to your harddrive, change the DNS servers, then wait for that change to take effect, sign into the new site and upload the duplicate?

    Duplicator does NOT run in WordPress on the “new site”. It runs as stand-alone PHP, so you don’t sign-on to WordPress to use it, and don’t need WordPress installed at all before using it on the new site.

    Keeping the same URL, I would create the new site with Duplicator first, before changing the DNS.

    One essential piece to all this is to have an alternate URL to the new host account’s web site, so that you can access it BEFORE the DNS is changed.
