I was working on a client’s site at 3pm yesterday, and everything was working as normal, file uploads were going into the right place and appearing within posts and pages as expected. four hours later I received an email from WordPress saying there had been an automatic update. Today I have returned to the client’s site only to find that the most recent 50 uploads in the media library have disappeared entirely, including from the server, all that remains are the tiny 150×150 thumbnails of a seemingly random selection of these images.

Is there anything in the update that could have caused this? Is there any way of ensuring that a similar glitch does not affect my site with any future updates?

Sneaky, I had a similar problem. 30-50 images disappeared, but the most recently 10 images are still in the media library.

I restored a database backup from 11/1, but the same images are gone. It seems as if this only happened after my automatic 4.0.1 update. I’m trying to reinstall 4.0.1 to see if it fixes anything, but I’m clueless.

    Any ideas?

Update: All the images uploaded from 1 user were deleted. I probably deleted the user without re-attributing his content to someone else…
