500 error cannot access wp-admin

    Hi there,

    I was attempting to edit my theme’s functions.php file to add some functionality to my website and managed to cause a 500 error that brought down the entire site.

    I copy-pasted the functions.php file that came in the theme’s original .zip folder into my web host’s file manager and that restored the actual website, but I’m still getting a 500 error when I try to access the dashboard through wp-admin.

    I’ve tried renaming the plugins folder in my file manager but all that seems to do is disable all the plugins on my website. Can anyone help steer me in the right direction here?

    If you changed the functions.php file in your theme, the problem would be in your theme folder. Have you tried reinstalling the theme? Since you can’t get to your dashboard to reinstall it, you can download the theme .zip file, then unzip it. Then, rename the current theme folder, and copy this one over (with the same name). I’m assuming you haven’t made any other changes. If you did, and you didn’t use a child theme or a plugin like Simple Custom CSS, then those changes would not carry over.

    can you temporarily switch to a theme like twentytwelve to see if problem persists.

    what plugins should be installed?

    do you have a backup?

    are you using a child theme for any of the theme changes? if not, that could help in future if you run into a similar problem.

    Am I able to switch themes through ftp or my file manager if I cannot access my dashboard?

    I’ve got quite a few plugins, mostly to do with the Genesis framework.

    No, I don’t have a backup, I’ve only just installed a new theme and foolishly forgot to back it up before I started messing around with it.

    I am using a child theme, but I’m unsure of what to do to restore the original theme… hopefully there’s a solution that doesn’t involve me losing all the work I’ve done to the site’s layout. =S

    Nevermind! I managed to download a copy of the theme and reupload it via ftp, now I’m back on track! Thank you so much for your help! I’m creating a backup of the website right now!
