Something went very wrong with Jetpack stats yesterday. At some point mid morning (UK time) it decided to stop counting the majority of visitors to headforpoints.com.

By the end of the day, Analytics was showing the usual 18,000 whilst JP had settled on 13,000.

As I write this (8.30am UK) JP is showing 1,700 for the day to date whilst Analytics shows the usual 4,950.

Any idea what can be causing this? I did very little work on the site yesterday so I doubt it can be linked to anything I have done. And JP Stats is working, just ignoring 2/3 of visitors. (It is possible it is just counting mobile? Wild guess.)

    Thanks.

  • Ditto, also seeing the same problem with a large number of visitors not being counted (based in the UK). Interestingly, the problem may have started as early as December 2nd and seems to be getting worse every day?

Dec 1 matches up with GA almost exactly.
Dec 2 is 6% less compared to GA.
Dec 3 is 40% less compared to GA.
Dec 4 (to date) is 45% less compared to GA.

By the way, not sure if this is connected or not, but WP also stopped remembering my log-in details yesterday. I have confirmed this across 2 laptops, an iPad and an iPhone.

Perhaps there is some broader cookie issue?

I had a look at your site, and the tracking code is there, on desktop and on mobile. Looking at your referrers, it seems you’ve lost some visitors across multiple referrers, so it’s not linked to a particular site not sending you traffic anymore.

Do you use any caching service, such as CloudFlare, on your site, or a plugin/service that may restrict access to your site from specific locations, like WordFence?

@khlo I would need to know your site URL to check how things look like in your stats.

    Hi Jeremy

The Google Analytics stats are exactly where they should be so the site is still getting the usual traffic. This is double-confirmed by AdSense still serving the usual number of impressions (and ad revenue not dipping).

The only plug-in I have added recently was Thirsty Affiliates but I doubt that could impact (and that has been in for a couple of weeks).

Other active plug-ins: Add to home screen WP, Akismet, Alexa Claim & Certify, Conditional CAPTCHA, Genesis Dashboard News, Genesis Simple Edits, Genesis Simple Hooks, Google Analytics by Yoast, LinkView, Mobile Theme Ads (hopefully that is OK :-)), RSS Footer, Simple Google Sitemap, Socia Media Widget, Thirsty Affiliates + GeoLocation Add-On, Ultimate No-Follow, VaultPress, WP Post Navigation.

As of 1pm UK time JP is showing 3,247 views. Analytics shows 10,571 of which 5379 is desktop, 3734 is mobile and 1473 tablet. It is possible that JP is just counting mobile views (with the mobile theme) and not desktop or tablet, both of which use the ‘standard’ view.

It is also not a location issue because 80% of my readers are UK based and the drop in JP reporting is far more than the 20% non-UK total.

Could it be a conflict with Google Analytics by Yoast? I justed looked at plug-in updates and that was the only one I have updated in the last 2-3 days.

There was also a VaultPress update 3 days ago. Those are the only suspects.

@jeremy Just sent you a message via the form – thanks!

@rjburgess99 Seeing the same behaviour as you – the only plugin I have in common with your website is Akismet so I doubt it’s due to a plugin conflict. No plug-in updates in the last few days (the last software update was WP4.0.1 on 20th November)

    i have the same issue

Hi, i too have had a real shock this morning as my wordpress stats ate showing about 80% less traffic than normal. Is this a bug? To test, i posted something on a google forum, using a Google url shortener. The shortener gives me a reading of 50 clicks to my site in 2 hours. WordPress stats is NOT showing any referalls from the google shortener at all.

Our business is generally quieter at thsi time of year but not THIS quiet.

So IS THERE a problem with jetpack or wordpress stats today or not, can anyone tell me?

We’re still looking into it. There is definitely an issue, but we haven’t found what’s causing the problem yet. It’s not a conflict with another plugin though, you can reset assured.

I’ll post again here as soon as I have some news.

@aldon Are you also located in the UK? Could you let me know what your site URL is?

FWIW, JP views for me yesterday were 6707 whilst Analytics puts my mobile views at 5879 pages. This gap is probably too big to assume that JP is only counting mobile pages.

@jeremy my site is autoblog.gr and i’am in Greece.

Yesterday Google Analytics has 50.335 pageviews but site stats on jetpack has only 31.513.

I did’t update any plugin on my site. i running those on my site

    Thanks all for the reports!

I just wanted to let you know that we found what caused the issue, and fixed the bug. Jetpack Stats are now working properly again, and we’re trying to backfill the missing stats now.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.
