• I’ve got an odd situation. I migrated my friends Drupal into WordPress, that is all fine and dandy, but he has over 400 categories. He treats them like key words. So I’m wondering what I could do. I’m somewhat capable with php and mySQL and customizing WP, but I’m not sure what my options are.

I guess I think I need a way for him to specify key words. Or have a list of them that triggers the search function. That would eliminate the need to specify them in every post.

    I don’t know. Thoughts?

  • For the most part, categories are seen as keywords or tags by most indexing systems. They just double up and preform internal blog indexing as well.

Okay… how does that tidbit help me?

He treats them like key words. So I’m wondering what I could do.

_you_ havent really explained what you are attempting to do What do you want to do with them? Further more, what type of keywords, keywords used within meta tags? keywords where?

Mike is telling you that (I think) that IF you left them as categories an internal search is still going to return them.

Gotcha. There is no meta. I just imported it from drupal… pretty bare-bones.

What I have is over 400 categories, which make my page sidebar incredibly tall. Not going to work. So I’m trying to figure out what to do with it. Its too big to dump all that into a combo box… maybe I can make a page just for them, displaying categories and calling them keywords. Then I could take what I consider major categories and make some navigation with them. You see, I’m thinking out loud. But a massive list of 400+ categories is not practical! (yeah, he shouldn’t have done it in the first place)

I understand they’re searcable, thats fine. What I’m trying to figure out is how to make it all nice and clean for the user experience.
