• Hello,

I just started my wordpress installation and wonder whether I can keep a good structure of IDs right from the start. I already removed two pages / categories and would like to put the remaining in good order. At the moment, there are 2 pages and 1 category. The pages are assigned the ID 2 and 5, while the category has ID 2. Where do I have to look at to bring this in good order?

    Many thanks in advance!

IDs don’t change. That’s sort of the whole point of them, they are fixed identifiers. They only increase in number, forever. If you delete a post/page, then it’s ID is lost and remains unused.

If you really want to do so, you can change them directly in the database, but WordPress offers no method of changing IDs itself. If you do attempt this, expect things to break. Badly. I recommend: a) keeping a backup of your database, b) not attempting it unless you really know what you’re doing and c) not doing it at all in the first place.

Changing IDs of anything is a bad idea in the long run. You don’t need to keep the ID’s “organized”. That’s not what they’re for.

That sounds like good advice, with respect to numerical Page IDs.

On this subject, what I would really like to know is, how can I change a Page ID such as ‘?page_id=29’ to read ‘music page’?

Is it possible to change the Page IDs which appear in the web browser address bar, to read as something more textually meaningful?

    Thta’s not changing the ID!
That’s called “permalinks” – too bad you didn’t look around in your admin panel before posting. I always recommend getting familiar with every page in your own admin panel before starting to post here.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Apologies for what must be a very noobie mistake.

‘Permalinks’ is an entirely new word to me. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary and pointing me in the right direction!

I will get to work on permalinks! ??
