• Each time one attaches a featured image to a post, the following files are created:

    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 3480 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-200x100.jpg
    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 4714 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-272x125.jpg
    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 7768 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-290x195.jpg
    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 5530 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-300x150.jpg
    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 1759 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-55x55.jpg
    -rw-rw---- 1 daemon daemon 17519 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988-660x330.jpg
    -rw-r--r-- 1 daemon daemon 22946 Dec 23 11:29 featured-image_4988.jpg

However, removing the image from inside the post does not remove those files from the disk. This could be a storage problem when having a busy site that many authors create posts and frequently change/update them.

Also, one of the (many) reasons we switched to NGG was to get rid of those kind of leaks present in WP default gallery. It would be great if we could at least have an option for this.

@fesarlis – Does this happen no matter where the Featured Image is chosen from? In almost all cases this would most likely have to do with the theme and the “custom” images it creates (typically in addition to the standard image sizes WordPress itself creates) … at least that is where I would look first.

Not sure what you mean ‘where feature image is chosen from’. In any case, and should this be a theme issue, do you think there is there a way to correct this?

Also, please let me know if you can suggest a way to select the featured image to ‘test’ it is removed.

@fesarlis – I was referring to a newly uploaded image into the Media Library or an image chosen from the NextGEN Gallery’s library?

I would recommend working with the theme author on correcting the issue with the theme, look at the various sizes being created and see if/where you are using them. At best I would expect you could possibly not create one but in most cases I suspect the sizes being created are inherent to the theme’s functionality and aesthetics.

I’m not sure what you are referring to with “a way to select the featured image to ‘test’ it is removed.”

    Thanks!
