Request: updated and more secure registration ability.

Are the developers looking to replace the existing registration system with something that is more current and dresses the environment that bloggers are in today? Why is is that if a user registers, even before they confirm they are added as a subscriber? In the course of an hour, I can have 20-30 new subscribers and they are all spam/fake.
At the very least, the ability to force the confirmation would be great and adding a captcha would be nice too. Or requiring all subscribers to be approved manually would be useful, although time consuming.

I’d also be thrilled if Active Directory integration was built in of requiring a plugin, and would love AD to be able to be used with multi-site.
