sorting entries from media tag

  • In a set of personal homepages I want to display links to the owner’s works (pdf) grouped into published and unppublished and, within group, sorted by year of completion or publication.
    I have uploaded the pdf and tagged them with author’s name, published/unpublished, year of completion.
    However, within group, the only way I see to sort them chrolologically is to “request” items in chrono order, that is:

    [media-tags media_tags=”author1, published,2014″ tags_compare=”AND”]
    [media-tags media_tags=”author1, published,2013″ tags_compare=”AND”]

    but this leaves ugly blanks between year groupings.
    As I understand the option orderby won’t do the job unless
    I orde by uploading date, which doesn’t work for me as I upload
    many works from different years at the same time.

    Are there other ways to get what I want?

    The only way to get this done is to not use the shortcodes and write your own WP_Query instance. This will provide maximum control over the query and output. but does require some technical skills.
