Front Page Widget Area

I’d like to use the Front Page widget area that’s supposed to appear under the slider. It seems no matter what widget I try the widget area won’t appear. I’ve check the help documentation but the section I need hasn’t been written yet.

Any help in getting this to display properly would be appreciated.
