Web Design Software

Hi guys, this isn’t 100% WordPress related, but seeing as all of my sites are run on WordPress I thought this would be the best place to post it.

Basically I’ve been building websites since 2004 and I’ve always done it manually using an ftp client like CoreFtp and Notepad++ to edit files. However, this process seems very slow and I can’t help but think there are now quicker and more efficient way of doing it?
What does everyone else use? There must be a more up to date and better method that this, especially in regards to WordPress considering how far that has come along since then.
