Lost .htaccess file

  • I upgraded to 2.2. Everything seemed fine. I wrote a post and it looked fine. But if I try to go to the specific page for that post, or any post, I get a file not found. So, essentially, I can’t get to any archives. Then I noticed that I had deleted the .htaccess file before uploading new files. I had done a backup of the full www directory before I did this. But when I look in the backup folder there is no .htaccess file!

    I am assuming the lack of archives and the lack of an .htaccess file is related. Any thoughts on what I should do?

  • Just go to options > permalinks, set the permalinks you want and then wordpress will show you want you need to put in your .htaccess file.

    Thanks. OK. I have archives back. But now I am not able to get my RSS reader to read the XML file.

    I don’t know if this has anything to do with your issue, circusguy, but I had a problem with my RSS and XML, and I fixed it (strangely) by deactivating all my plugins. I reactivated them 1 by 1 until i found the one that was causing the problem.

    Then I looked in the php of that plugin, and sure enough, there was a blank space at the beginning or end of the file, which should not be there. I deleted the space, and everything is back to normal.

    Thanks Dgold. But that didn’t work. I only had a few plugins. I turned them all off and still no xml.

    .htaccess files are NOT necessarily ‘lost’ or ‘deleted’ if you cannot see them from the viewpoint of your FTP application or Web design software.

    The dot, “.”, in front of the htaccess file tells your server to hide it. Its a hidden file. This means that it may be there, you just cannot see it (or download it).

    I had the same problem.

    You need to tell your ftp software to ‘show hidden files’ to be really sure that it is not there. Not all ftp programs offer this option. (Dreamweaver doesn’t do it.)
