Today, I deactivated my previous WordPress blog and did a clean installation of the latest software. I imported my old posts and photos and everything seems to be fine. However, when I went to add themes, every time I tried to download one, I received the following error message:

Download failed. error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

Is this some kind of issue with 4.1? I’ve literally done nothing more with this blog than import my previous posts from the blog I had to deactivate, so I’m pretty sure I haven’t had time to break anything.

    My site is https://www.lobablanca.com

    – try adding manually via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application provided by your hosting provider (cPanel…).
    – then activate via the dashboard

That digest error may also be related to an issue with an outdated version of OpenSSL on your server. It would be worth contacting your hosts support group to pass that error message on to them just to be safe. They may want to look into it.

Thank you. I have passed the error message to my server host. Hopefully, they can address the problem. I would like to have a resolution rather than a workaround. I learned the hard way that ignoring issues just compounds them to the point that you end up having to wipe everything and start again.

    I

    I would agree.
Adding/updating thems, plugins, WP shouldn’t be a problem.

The weird thing is that I can download new plugins and I can update the plugins and themes that came preinstalled with WordPress. I just can’t download new themes. I’m waiting to hear back from my ISP. Here’s hoping they can come through for me…for once.

Okay, I am at an utter loss and I really need someone who will do more than the lame “customer service” at my ISP. With what I’ve learned here and through my own independent research, I believe that my problem stems from an OpenSSL issue, but my ISP keeps telling me that it is a problem with WordPress. My ISP is Yahoo Small Business. My ISP sucks.

Not only am I getting the previously posted error whenever I try to download a new theme through WordPress, I also noticed that I’m getting this error message under the “WordPress News” window on my dashboard: RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: error:0D0890A1:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_verify:unknown message digest algorithm

Again, all that I’m reading points back to a server problem. I have now tried twice through Yahoo Small Business’s email support and twice through their Facebook DM. Nothing. They refuse to acknowledge that this is something on their side.

Could this in any way be a WordPress problem? I’m currently doing work on a WordPress site hosted on Dreamhost and I’m not encountering any problems at all with that.

    Someone, please help.

Nope, this is a Yahoo hosting issue – see this thread:

And Yahoo Small Business refuses to do anything more than tell me it’s a WordPress problem and that I need to consult WordPress for the solution.

Recommendations for a better server host? I’m looking at Dreamhost but I’m open for suggestions.

Okay, excellent idea, but we are not allowed to discuss hosting here per the forum guidelines – but that’s one recommended here:

Ah, understood. Thank you for that link. I will look into my options.

    WordPress 4.3

We are getting this error when we try to re-install wordpress 4.3, update any theme/plugins. We are not getting anywhere with Yahoo small business. Does someone know how to solve this issue?
