Use the plugin without SSL

Is it possible to use this plugin without SSL? I’d like to handle payment off-site anyhow (Paypal Standard, yes i’ve read the warnings), so it hardly seems necessary to purchase one.
Background: I hope to use this plugin for a one off registration for a pay-per-view video.
