Using WP as a CMS with embedded blog
-
Hi,
I currently have a basic static html site and a separate Blogger-powered blog. I’ve been wanting use WP for a long time, mainly because of the wonderful-looking sites you can create with it and also because of the convenient admin interface.
So I downloaded and installed WP 2.2, and started working on my new site, full of enthusiasm. However, I’ve run into a few problems – no doubt easy to overcome if you’re a web developer and fluent in PHP, but it you’re a relative newbie, quite challenging. I’m hoping somebody here can give me a few pointers, rather than me having to abandon WP and stick to boring old static html.
Here’s what I want to create:
– A home page and a few other static pages, one or two of which have sub-pages (one level of sub-pages only).
– Main horizontal nav menu to show the top level pages, and a page for “blog”.
– When viewing one of the static pages, I’d like the sidebar to contain only the search box and a list of links to sub-pages (so for a page with no supages, this list will disappear).
– On the “blog” page, I’d like my blog posts to appear, and I’d like the sidebar to contain more elements – like an archive select menu, a blogroll, RSS feeds etc.I should point out that I’ve spent a good number of hours already trawling the internet (WP codex and other sites) looking for ways of achieving this, and have tried a few things, none of which seem to quite do what I need.
Is what I want doable with a minimum amount of fuss, or am I really being too ambitious?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Rob
