    EWWW IO needs more than GD to work. GD is used only for image conversion, and does not do any image optimization at all.

    So, two options:

    1. Switch hosts. I honestly question the capabilities of any host that disables exec for security, when so many very large hosts can leave it enabled. The exception to this is managed WordPress hosts like WPEngine, which makes more sense, because they have a very tightly controlled environment for performance reasons.

    2. If you like your host, and don’t mind spending a little extra to get those images optimized, you can use the EWWW IO Cloud service: https://ewww.io/plans/
